When did it happen?
I watched a video today that talked about beauty standards in our world today, and it got me thinking. At what point do we look at ourselves and decide we aren't good enough? When do we look at someone else and go "wow if only I was like that." When do we decide that we aren't smart enough, brave enough, talented enough, athletic enough, attractive enough? At what age do we let society dictate every single aspect of our lives? It donned on me that I will never be any more or less than who I already am. But because of the media and other people, I decided that who I was and what I looked like was wrong. I started to hide away who I am, how I actually looked, and my heart. Slowly what I pretendwd to be became just as much a part of me as who I actually am. Everyone does this in one way or another, and it's heartbreakinkg. People walking around everyday pretending, hiding, destroying themselves in way or another to please the unpleaseable. What will it take to realize that we can be smart, funny, beautiful, athletic, skinny, graceful, kind, and wealthy all the while still not be enough? Who we already are needs to be enough. But the problem is, we are trying to be enough for others when really we just need to be enough for us. Until we realize this, we will always be comparing, hating, and changing ourselves.
